The Ministry of Health has confirmed today that a woman who recently travelled from overseas and completed her stay in managed isolation in the Pullman Hotel in Auckland has tested positive for COVID-19.
In a press conference held this afternoon Minister for COVID-19 Response Chris Hipkins confirmed the case status. Minister Hipkins added the person’s husband and hairdresser have tested negative, which is an encouraging development.
The Minister also confirmed that the strain of infection is the South African variant and the source of infection is highly likely to be a fellow returnee during the person’s stay at the Pullman Hotel. Mr. Hipkins says this is good news because they know where the source of infection is and don’t have to divert the scientists and health experts from other COVID related work in order to identify that source. He thanked the scientists for their fast work completing the genome sequencing overnight.
Mr. Hipkins says at this stage they don’t know exactly how the infection took place. Investigations are continuing that include looking at CCTV footage from the Pullman hotel to identify when and where they may have come into contact with one another. The Minister thanked the woman who adhered to infection control guidelines in her room and in the exercise space, for her diligence, and says everything they have seen suggests she has done all of the right things.
He also confirmed that it has been decided to delay the release of people who were due to complete their isolation at the Pullman today. 46 people affected by the decision will stay “a little longer”. The MOH is expected to give an update later this afternoon.
